Bolt beats Powell at Weltklasse meet

World record-holder Usain Bolt shook off his Jamaican teammate Asafa Powell to win the 100 metres in 9.81 seconds at the Weltklasse meet in Switzerland today.



Bolt, the World and Olympic champion, trailed Powell halfway into the race then used his huge stride to pull ahead and even eased up in the last couple of metres.



Powell finished in 9.88, followed by two Americans, Darvis Patton in 9.95 and Michael Rodgers in 9.98.



It was Bolt’s first race since smashing world records in the 100 and 200 at the world championships in Berlin.



There were two other victories for Jamaica at the meet. Dwight Thomas won the men’s 110-metre hurdles in 13.16 and World champions Brigitte Foster-Hylton took the women’s 100-metre hurdles in 12.45. Delloreen Ennis-London of Jamaica finished fourth in 12.62.



Meanwhile, Kerron Stewart of Jamaica lost her chance for a share of the million dollar US jackpot by losing the 100 metres.



Carmelita Jeter of the United States won in 10.86, while Stewart finished second in 11.04.



Debbie Ferguson of Bahamas was third in 11.04 and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica faded to fourth in 11.10.



In the women’s 400 metres, Shericka Williams finished third in 50.40 and her Jamaican teammate Novlene Williams-Mills was fifth in 50.69.



Jamaican-born American Sanya Richards won the race in 48.94 to remain in contention for a share of the US$1 million Golden League Jackpot.
