Officials in India are reporting that at least 300 people have been killed and more than 1 million displaced as a result of recent floodings which were triggered by torrential rains.
They say rescue and relief operations are in high gear but it may take a few more weeks for the situation to stabilize.
India\'s military says it has supplied more than 4.5 tonnes of food to flood-ravaged zones in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and soldiers have evacuated more than 2,000 people from the areas.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced assistance payments of about $2,000 for the families of each person killed by the flood.
