Majority Russian owned Bauxite Company United Rusal has shut down its Guyana operations, while the company’s management holds salary negotiations with the worker’s union.

Several workers at the bauxite company took strike action in a bid to get the management to pay retroactive salaries to them.

The company said it has suffered heavy losses because of industrial action that has lasted more than a week.

United Rusal attorney Andrew Pollard told BBC Caribbean that the bauxite company\'s Guyana operation is losing US$100,000 in direct losses each day.

Last week the company fired 56 workers because of what it said was their insubordination, refusal to obey instructions and misconduct.

The union and management have agreed on a 10 percent pay hike retroactive to January of this year.

However, they are yet to resolve other critical areas.
