Rescue workers are now conducting assessments after the Solomon Islands were rattled by seven earthquakes yesterday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the islands were first struck by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, followed by a 7.2 tremor within an hour.

Authorities say the five other earthquakes measured at least a five on the Richter scale.

The National Disaster Management Office confirmed damage to the village of Vaniata, which has been evacuated.

The quakes destroyed 16 homes and damaged another 60.

The Solomon Islands form a small country east of Paupa, New Guinea in the pacific.
