World champion Carlo Janka took an expected lead in the first run of the Olympic giant slalom race at Whistler today, while American Bode Miller made an unexpected early exit from the competition on Day 12 of the Vancouver Olympics.

Russia secured the first gold medal of the day, with Olga Zaitseva finishing off victory in the women\'s biathlon relay in 1 hour, 9 minutes, 36.3 seconds after Olga Medvedtseva had given the team a 45-second lead at the last exchange.

France was 32.8 seconds behind in second place and Germany took the bronze. It was Russia\'s third gold medal of the Vancouver Games, well behind the table-leading United States and Germany with seven gold medals apiece.

Swiss skier Janka finished the first slalom run in 1 minute, 17.27 seconds to lead Romed Baumann, one of three Austrians in the top six by two-hundredths of a second.

Norway\'s Aksel Lund Svindal, who already has a gold and a silver medal here, was a further 0.14 back in third position.

Miller\'s bid for a record fourth Alpine medal at a single Winter Games was derailed when he couldn\'t correct his line coming out of a right-hand gate in the second half of his run. He almost crashed out in the top half.
