International donors pledge $10 billion for Haiti
International donors yesterday pledged a lot more money than was predicted to help Haiti at the UN conference in New York.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says donors have promised nearly 10 billion dollars for both short and long term investments.
This is significantly more than the initial instalment of $4 billion which was requested.
Donors are said to have pledged $5 billion for the next two years, and another $5 billion for longer-term development.
The biggest contributions came from the United States and the European Union, but more than 130 countries as well as key international financial institutions took part in the conference.
The money will be used to build hospitals, schools and government buildings, create jobs and reform Haiti\'s key farming sector.
