Spain coach salutes Switzerland
Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque saluted Switzerland for their solid work in defence against his team yesterday, but insisted they did not deserve victory.
Switzerland won the game 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban to record the biggest upset of the World Cup so far.
Gelson Fernandes ran through the Spanish defense to score the only goal of the match to give Switzerland their first ever win over Spain.
“Switzerland played a defensive game and tried to take advantage of any counter-attack and dead-ball situation,” said Del Bosque.
Spain know they must beat Chile and Honduras to be assured of progressing, but Del Bosque said he will not change his team\'s attacking style in favour of a more conservative approach.
Local football expert Clyde Jureidini said Del Bosque’s side will now be under pressure going into their second game.
In the other Group H match yesterday, Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in Durban to record their first win at the World Cup in 48 years.
In the night game, Diego Forlon scored twice in Uruguay’s big 3-0 victory over South Africa, meaning the South Africans must beat France in their last Group ‘A’ match or become the first host in the 80-year history of the World Cup to go out in the first round.
