Liberia's deputy parliamentary speaker Togba Mulbah has been freed after briefly being held under house arrest for allegedly ordering the beating of a policeman.

Mulbah was held at his home in the Liberian capital, Monrovia for several hours where he was told to write a statement about what happened.

The authorities had earlier said the policeman was beaten unconscious after he tried to impound one of Mulbah's vehicles on Saturday.

However, details of the events remain unclear.
