More vaccination for Haitian children
The United Nations says it wants to reach an additional 500 thousand children during a second round of emergency immunizations in Haiti, more than six months after the devastating earthquake hit the country.
According to Marco Jimenez of the UN Children’s Fund, the second round of immunizations will cover diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, rubella and polio.
The Fund said more than 275 thousand children have been immunised so far against major vaccine preventable diseases.
Despite some progress, UNICEF said more than 1.2 million children in Haiti are exposed to exploitation and abuse, while some 800 thousand live in tents at sites which lack adequate sanitation and where access to safe water, education and health facilities are limited.
