Thompson’s widow enjoys electoral success

The wife of David Thompson, the late Barbados Prime Minister has won yesterday's by election in the St John constituency.
Democratic Labour Party candidate Mara Thompson now holds the seat that had been left vacant by the death of her husband.
She got just over 4,600 votes to the 553 polled by her rival Hudson Griffith of the opposition Barbados Labour Party.
It is an historic victory, the first time that the widow of a Barbados MP has replaced her husband as constituency parliamentary representative.
Opposition Leader Owen Arthur, who had focused on the nationality of St Lucian-born Thompson during the lead-up to the by election, has congratulated her.
