Former Caribbean cricket financier Allen Stanford is being sent to a prison hospital to receive treatment for addiction to anti-anxiety medication and for psychiatric evaluation.

A US judge last month declared Stanford unfit to stand trial on charges of running a $7 billion fraud from his base in Antigua.

The former billionaire is said to have become addicted to a powerful anti-anxiety medicine in prison.

A federal Bureau of Prisons website listed Stanford's status as in transit from a Houston jail to another facility.

He has pleaded not guilty to a 21-count criminal indictment that he ran a Ponzi scheme.
