The four American sailors who were hijacked by Somali pirates off the coast of Oman on Friday have been killed.

The US military says its forces that were trailing the vessel had responded to gunfire when they discovered that all the captives had been shot.

The yacht S/V Quest, was owned and sailed by Scott and Jean Adam of California.

Two passengers who were also aboard the vessel identified as Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle were also killed.

According to the US Central Command, negotiations were underway between the US Navy and the pirates, when the US forces heard gunfire coming from the yacht.

Two of the pirates were later killed by the US navy.
