A jury in Puerto Rico has convicted a senator and a businessman of bribery.

The trial featured allegations that Senator Hector Martinez accepted a trip to Las Vegas to see a boxing match in exchange for political favours from businessman Juan Bravo Fernandez.

Both men face a maximum penalty of 10 years and a $250,000 fine for the bribery conviction.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 7.

Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno issued a statement saying Senator Martinez should resign and abandon all his parliamentary responsibilities.

The Senator's lawyer said he planned to appeal.
