A Canadian woman who admitted to importing US$1.7 million worth of heroin and cocaine into Bermuda has been jailed for 15 years.

Officials say 47-year-old Janet Grant, of Scarborough, Ontario, was arrested after she arrived on a flight from Toronto and the drugs were found in her hand luggage at the L.F. Wade International Airport.

Her lawyer, Llewellyn Peniston, said his client, who he described as economically challenged, was offered US$5,000 by someone to bring the package to Bermuda but did not know what was inside it.

Her case comes after a number of female drug mules were caught and jailed.

Last month, three Bermudians were jailed for 18 months for smuggling almost US$30,000 worth of marijuana on a chartered flight from Jamaica.
