Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not accepting a call by US President Barack Obama for peace with the Palestinians based on borders drawn up in 1967.
The BBC reports that after tense talks at the White House, a defiant Netanyahu said Israel was prepared to compromise but there could be no peace based on what he called illusions.
Obama, who has formally adopted the principle, admits there were differences between the views.
But the US president says such differences are possible between friends.
