The Ministry of Health in Dominica said it will boost intervention in an attempt to curb the outbreak of dengue fever on the island.

Health officials said while there are no reported deaths as a result of the virus, it’s important to work to prevent a further outbreak.

According to Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Johnson, for the month of August, 15 new cases of the illness spread by the aedes aegypti mosquito had been confirmed.

He said the ministry is awaiting the results on nine suspected cases.

But Johnson said the majority of the cases were confined to the capital and nearby areas.

Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, rash, severe headaches, back pain, eye pain, muscles and joint pain.
