Antigua objects LIAT plans

The main opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) says it will oppose any move to dissolve the regional airline and re-start it under a new company.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the suggestion last week , after the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association grounded the carrier for two days over the dismissal of their chairman Captain Michael Blackburn.

LIAT is owned by the governments of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda.

However, Dr. Gonsalves said that St. Lucia and Dominica are interested in becoming shareholders.

However in a statement, ALP leader Lester Bird said he completely rejects the suggestion by Dr. Gonsalves and is calling for Prime Minister Spencer to include the opposition in any consultation and decision-making that pertains to LIAT.
