Multilateral agencies to study Caribbean pension systems

The Inter American Development Bank (IDB) says it is partnering with the World Bank and the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to analyse pension systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.

IDB experts warn that millions of workers in Latin America and the Caribbean run the risk of poverty during their retirement years unless countries reform their pension systems.

It says the partnership with the two international financial agencies will help policy-makers design and implement effective retirement-income policies.

The project is said to be the first analysis of its kind in the region.

The final report, including detailed analyses and an assessment of the policy implications of the results, is expected to be published early in 2013.
