McCullum captain of World Cup team

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP):

New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum gained some small consolation by being named captain of the team of the World Cup yesterday, a day after the Black Caps lost the final by seven wickets to Australia.

McCullum scored 328 runs in nine matches with four half-centuries, but was out for a duck in the first over of the final.

The team, chosen by an International Cricket Council panel, included four other New Zealanders - Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Martin Guptill and Daniel Vettori.

There were three Australians - Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc; two South Africans - A.B. de Villiers and Morne Morkel; and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara as wicketkeeper-batsman.

Starc was also named Player of the Tournament following Sunday's final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Dibaba runs third-fastest women's 5K

CARLSBAD, California (AP):

Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia ran the third-fastest women's 5,000 metres ever at 14 minutes, 48 seconds in the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday.

Dibaba dominated the women's field, finishing 25 seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Gelete Burka (15:13). Wude Yimer of Ethiopia was third in 15:18.

"It was fast running for me today," Dibaba said through a translator. "But I did not go out fast enough."

She missed the world record by two seconds.

The top American woman was Sarah Brown of Solana Beach, California, who was eighth in 15:48.

Lawi Lalang of Kenya was the overall winner in 13:32. Wilson Too of Kenya was second in 13:29 and Bernard Lagat of Tucson, Arizona, was third in 13:41.
