Monymusk lands not good for sugar

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Anyone who studied agriculture at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, in the 1960s to 1990s would have learned from Professor Nizam Ahmad that the lands in south Clarendon are not suitable for the growing of sugar cane.

Why? The land is saline from: (1) marine incursion, (2) heavy use of inorganic fertiliser and (3) low rainfall.
