Church role in skills training crucial

THE EDITOR, Sir:
More than a month ago, I attended the graduation exercise for a skills-training programme. This is sponsored by the Church of the Open Bible, May Pen, for its Added Learning Institute.
The motto states: 'Empowered Today for an Enriched Tomorrow'. The coordinator, Heather Lyn, and her staff are all volunteers - all unsung heroes in the community. Course programmes include floral arrangement, dressmaking, meal preparation and cake and pastry making.
The guest speaker, Dr Euphemia Burke-Robinson, an education officer with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, gave a riveting and highly motivational address. Testimonials of the graduates spoke to empowerment, transformed lives, and the creation of strong, positive social bonds. Later, I was blown away by the high standard of their exhibits.
In considering the zones of special operations, I implore churches and other community groups to invest in skills training for both youth and adults. This will change lives and help to enhance the communities' profile.
In closing, I salute the memory of Doreen Pennant, who was inextricably linked to the Added Learning Institute.
