The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) is reporting that the 190 megawatt power plant under construction in Old Harbour Bay, is now over 40 per cent complete.

It says this year, Phase 2 of the project will see mechanical and electrical works being carried out.

The JPS says the first of three gas turbines for the plant arrived in the island last month and other works are proceeding according to schedule.

JPS President & CEO, Emanuel DaRosa says the company is very pleased with the progress on the new power station.

When this new plant is commissioned, it will replace the Old Harbour Power Plant, significantly contributing to the modernisation of the JPS generation fleet.

DaRosa says this is an important element in improving customer service and reliability, as well as increasing fuel diversity.

JPS says the new project has also helped create employment in the Old Harbour Bay community.

Two-hundred-and-thirty-nine local jobs have been created, with over 140 of these being held by persons from the surrounding communities.

The new power plant, which is being constructed at a cost of US$330 million, is scheduled to be commissioned in June 2019.
