JUTC urges extreme caution along Mandela Highway

The state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is urging public transportation users to exercise extreme caution when using the Mandela Highway in light of traffic changes implemented by the National Works Agency (NWA) along the major thoroughfare.

The NWA has moved vehicular traffic onto a new section of highway located between the Highway 2000 East/West Off Ramp and Tom Cringle Drive.

As a result, persons wishing to access businesses in the Ferry community must now turn at Tom Cringle Drive.

In a statement this afternoon, JUTC Managing Director Paul Abrahams said while the improvement work is necessary, he is extremely concerned about the lack of consultation.

“it appears no provision has been made for the pickup and set down of passengers, which is a significant risk to commuters in and around the Ferry community,” Abrahams said.

“as such, the bus company is appealing to commuters and motorists to be very vigilant in using this busy thoroughfare and to obey the directives of the Police, flagmen and other personnel who have been tasked with managing traffic flow, while the roadway is undergoing significant improvement”.

The JUTC said the NWA has been asked to erect road signs as part of the overall safety plan.
