JLP retains Yallahs Division

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has retained the Yallahs Division in the St Thomas Municipal Corporation.

This after the party’s candidate, John Lee easily won yesterday’s by-election, polling 1,859 votes.

His People’s National Party (PNP) opponent, Constantine Bogle got 1,338 votes.

The win leaves the St Thomas Municipal Corporation evenly split at 5-5 between the JLP and the PNP.

The by-election became necessary after the Supreme Court ruled in March that the JLP’s Dean Jones was ineligible to serve as Councillor for the Yallahs Division because he was employed to the government at the time of the 2016 local government election.

This is a violation of the country’s electoral law.
