Night club owner faces human trafficking charges
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua and Barbuda police have slapped five charges of human trafficking against the operator of a nightclub, four years after she was freed of 40 similar charges.
In a statement, police said that in addition to the five counts of human trafficking, Cheryl Thompson, the operator of Jam Dung Night Club, has also been charged with five counts of debt bondage in relation to human trafficking.
The authorities said that the offences occurred between December 2017 and February 2018.
Earlier this year, Thompson was charged with four counts of human trafficking following a raid on her establishment.
Those alleged offences occurred between November 30, 2017, and February 9, 2018.
In 2011, the police issued 40 human trafficking related charges against Thompson.
But the charges were dismissed in 2014 since penalties under the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention) Act were declared unlawful by the High Court.
The act was amended in 2015.
