The 2018 Cohort of Nestlé Needs YOUth Interns selected from a cross section of tertiary institutions islandwide are pictured here in rapt attention as Market Nutritionist – Annalee Gray delivers her presentation on Nutrition at Nestle. The young professionals were completing orientations ahead of their internship stint with the multinational.

As part of their Nestle Needs YOUth Initiative, which began in 2016, Nestle Jamaica opened its new head office to 25 youths as part of their summer employment programme, a 100 per cent increase since the start of the initiative. The objective of the Nestle Needs YOUth Programme is to reduce youth unemployment. Since the programme began, over 1247 youths participated in training programmes, 39 completed internships and summer work, and 33 were hired into permanent positions within the company.

The summer programme, launched at the company's new location in Ferry Pen, St Andrew, will give youths an opportunity to acquire on-the-job training and experience.

This year Nestle decided to add a new dimension to its programme by partnering with the National Youth Service to participate in its Empowerment Programme through the provision of work experience for participants with disabilities. The programme is designed to support these individuals by providing three weeks of personal and professional development training and six months of supported work experience, thereby improving their employability.

Over the duration of the summer programme, the participants will take part in workshops that will cover critical areas to gain employment and succeed in the workplace, including resume writing, soft skills 101, interviewing techniques, dressing for success, communication, and organisational development skills.
