National cleansing?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
If Donald Trump has his way, birthright citizenship would soon be a thing of the past. But the basis for it seems quite weird. If one cannot be guaranteed citizenship by virtue of being born in the United States (US), how does that not also apply almost to all Americans, since it's hardly likely that there are any born there without external family ties?
If being born in the US is not a guarantee for birthright citizenship, it seems obvious that being a bona fide citizen of America quite possibly is based on race considerations, personal prejudices and suspicion of people from other countries. In other words, my personal impression of you is that you are not good enough and you should be as unwelcomed in my country as you would in my own home, however hard you may work to make any contribution, because your family tie is unfortunate. Is that the reasoning? If so, maybe a need for national cleansing may have inspired this recommendation.
