Revive the Values and Attitudes Programme

Published:Thursday | May 9, 2019 | 3:14 PM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The incident in which a young ‘lady’ found some monies, in an ATM on the Central Police Station compound, and handed it over to two officers, is a welcome twist from how we view our youths. She should be commended for her extraordinary stance towards honesty, despite the odds of being faced by poverty. This shows that all is not lost, and there are still many honest persons among us who would do the same. The mother did a most despicable act, angrily chiding the child, for not taking the money, because she wanted the use of it. She has signalled the wrong value, which our wayward society could well do without.

The mother should be summoned to do a compulsory workshop on proper parenting skills, owing to her-less-than-divine action. Honesty will always be the best of policy. The mother actually called the child ‘stupid’ for doing a commendable act. We need to revive the Values and Attitudes Programme in the Jamaican society, because many youngsters seem to recognise the importance of doing what is acceptable and right as a citizen. When a child from the inner city can stand up and be counted as an upstanding citizen, it is saying to schools and churches to continue spreading the values of honesty and proper character building.
