Running Events boosts PPE fund for health workers
Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis, head of the Running Events Jamaica Foundation and race director of Running Events Jamaica, said his organisation felt compelled to make a contribution of $400,000 to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers, to show appreciation for their bravery during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pledge was made during the recent national telethon to raise funds for the safety equipment.
“We are moved by the fact that our health workers risk their lives every day on the front line to care for the sick, and without the necessary PPE they could lose their lives,” Francis said.
According to him, although many races managed by Running Events have been cancelled or postponed due to the virus, his organisation stood ready to stage virtual races at the recognised high professional level for which Running Events is known.
“For the virtual races, we will be waiving our fees for any fundraiser to benefit health workers and other charities at this time. We are also using this time of lockdown to prepare for the new normal in race events that is expected post-COVID-19,” Francis concluded.
