Letter of the Day | Political leaders should behave responsibly
THE EDITOR, Madam:
In the Friday, October 2, edition of The Gleaner, Peter Espeut raised some very important points for both political parties to consider in light of the dramatic COVID-19 spread after nomination day and the general election on September 3. The evidence put forth with regard to this undesirable spread of the virus cannot be refuted by any right-thinking person or politician.
Therefore, given the exponential increase of infections with the aforementioned events, it would be more than foolhardy for the leadership and membership of both political parties to conduct the upcoming local elections in the customary manner with the amassing of supporters, which would definitely increase further the dreaded virus.
For the prime minister and the leader of the opposition to continue in a business-as-usual manner for political ascendency at the municipal level would be tantamount to contributing to endangering the lives of many of our Jamaican people, which raises the questions, is this the price of political power? Could their conscience afford that price?
