Social media reaction to Mark Golding’s victory

Published:Monday | November 9, 2020 | 12:13 AM

St Andrew Southern Member of Parliament Mark Golding has won the People’s National Party’s presidential election. Golding defeated Lisa Hanna by 296 votes to claim the presidency of the 82-year-old party.

Here are the top responses via Gleaner’s social media pages:

Apparently, we want another sleeping person in Parliament. I guess Andrew Holness will be the prime minister of Jamaica until he should retire.

The reality of this election is that the PNP will be in the opposition for many many years to come, wehh Mark Golding a go?

@rowe.maria

Thank you Jesus!! Second good news for today, we don’t want no more Portia kind of behaviour here. I admire this man’s humility. Well done delegates!

@janetlamount

I think the PNP delegates voted wrong again. Anyway, they probably enjoy opposition status or they are prepared to enjoy it for a long time to come. This is sad!

Don’t get me wrong, Mark is great. I would love to see him be our next attorney general but we need a personality like Lisa to beat an Andrew Holness. I don’t think the PNP delegates have analysed the Jamaican voters well.

Bruce Smith

It was not a popularity contest. It was about competence and electing a leader that can unite the party and provide a vision for the future. Thank you to both Lisa and Mark for putting yourselves forward.

Clifton Whittaker

Congratulations Mr Golding, it’s time to unite the PNP. The task will not be easy but you need to accommodate everybody’s views because the party is still split because that margin is too small.

Peter Wallace

Unless Mark begins to listen to the people, this election outcome won’t move the needle for the PNP. More of the same old establishment. Missed opportunity for real change.

Doreth Bartley

I’m glad the party showed Lisa that is not a beauty contest and how popular you are. You have to put the people first and not yourself. It is not about her. I hope Mark will do the work which is needed. The virus has mash things up but PNP is still there.

Linton Golding

Congratulations Mark. I may not be a fan of your party at the moment, but I still want to see best for any top political position, especially at that level!

Donovan Smith

The PNP had the chance to listen to the electorate of Jamaica who wanted Lisa Hanna as party president. But yet again, they failed to do so. I am beyond hurt and disappointed. I definitely won’t be supporting the PNP in the next general election. Andrew Holness and the JLP will get a third term easily.
