Cops sign wage deal today
After weeks of muscle-flexing and fiery rhetoric, rank-and-file police will this morning ink an agreement with the Government for a four per cent wage hike.
In an all-island branch board meeting with Jamaica Police Federation central committee last Wednesday, it was disclosed that the finance ministry had accepted 16 of the 53 proposed benefits that the police union brought to the negotiation table.
Police Federation Chairman Corporal Rohan James has not yet addressed the matter publicly, but in a brief seen by The Gleaner, the proposals included increases in housing acquisition loans and education grants by $20 million and $15 million, respectively, and another $20-million rise in a computer loan fund.
It is unclear which specific points were mutually agreed on.
The proposed terms included an $8-million rise in scholarship funding for children of federated members and a further $5 million for an income replacement fund.
The federation also proposed an increase from $70,000 to $100,000 in relocation allowances and improved daily meal allowance of $855.
A medical fund of $80 million was also on the table.
