Three of the six girls in the JAAA Carifta Trials 3,000-metre under-20 event inside the National Stadium on Sunday found the going too tough and failed to finish as Vere Technical's Ashara Frater staked her claim as the best junior in the island over the distance.

Frater clocked 10 minutes, 41.50 seconds, finishing four seconds ahead of Hydel High School's Jodian Campbell, 10:45.14.

The only other finisher in the event, Kaydeen Johnson of Steer Town Academy, stopped the clock in 10:58.86.

In the boys' under-17 equivalent, Jamaica College's Tyrone Lawson crossed the tape in 9:24.22, to finish ahead of St Jago High School's Daniel Pennant, who stopped his timer at 9:33.10.

Third in the event was St Elizabeth Technical High School's Damontre Smith in 9:42.50. He finished ahead of the Clarendon College pair of Obinna Reid, 9:45.28, and Rushanne James, 10:37.70.
