The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev and Rt Hon Dr Robert Runcie (left), received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. Sir Allen Lewis, on Saturday, March 17, 1984, at the university's Mona campus. The function was one of the highlights of Runcie's four-day visit to Jamaica, which ended on March 19.
On the final day of his historic visit to Jamaica, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev and Rt Hon Dr Robert Runcie paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Edward Seaga and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. The Lord Bishop of Jamaica, the Rt Rev Neville DeSouza (left), accompanied the Anglican primate to the meeting at Jamaica House, which was Dr Runcie's last official engagement in the island before leaving for Antigua in continuation of his tour of the Anglican Province of the West Indies.

Dr Runcie, the archbishop of Canterbury, and members of his team arrived on the island for a four-day visit. Runcie had several engagements in the short space of time, as he wanted spread the message the unity to as many as he could.
