Workshop to teach students how to tackle exams
Exams play a big role in evaluating students. Testing is an important method used to determine the extent to which course material has been learned by pupils and provides a standardised mode for certification. Despite the fact that exams are a key part of academic assessment, schools generally are not able teach students how to take them.
“Teenagers who struggle with exams usually fail to interpret questions correctly,” said Karla Hylton, founder of Bio & Chem Tutoring. “Decoding exam questions is critical to proving proficiency in a subject area. Key words, referred to as command words, act as clues for how answers should be approached. It is essential pupils understand these words in order to provide the correct response and to secure maximum points.”
With the sitting of major test papers just around the corner, Hylton will be hosting a virtual workshop, ‘The Art of Taking Exams’, on Sunday, March 27.
To assist students with their exam preparations, Hylton, who has enjoyed more than 25 years as an educator, will cover critical test-taking strategies. These techniques include thinking like an examiner, presenting mathematical and graphical answers, interpreting command words, answering questions effectively, and handling exam anxiety.
“Although students have only just returned to full, face-to-face classes, they already have to start thinking about exams,” says Paula Dixon, technical training specialist at Bio & Chem Tutoring.
