Holmwood Technical’s head coach Dave Anderson has warned his rivals that his girls’ team should not be taken lightly at this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs). The championships is scheduled for April 5-9 at the National Stadium.

Anderson said that they may not have depth in their squad to challenge for the title this year but they have a very rounded team and if any of the top three teams – defending champions Edwin Allen High School, Hydel High School and St Jago High Schools – slip up then they will be ready to claim the title.

“The plan is to always be one of those competitive team but realistically this time around, we don’t have the team to be top contenders, but we are trying our best to work our way back to the top,” said Anderson.

“If the teams above us don’t turn up and have their best days, then anything is possible and we will seize the opportunity once it is available to win this championship,” he said.

“We still have fans who are expecting good performance from us and so we have to make sure that we turn up because we are not going out there to make up numbers,” Anderson stated.

Holmwood, who last won the title in 2013, finished fourth at last year’s championships. Anderson said that they have a pretty young team with a lot of exciting new talents that will be on show during the five-day championships.

“This is a rebuilding year for us and we would really like to allow the team to do their best and still bring some quality performances so that Jamaica still remembers that Holmwood Technical are still around,” said Anderson.

“Our middle distance has been holding the team because we have been doing well at all the development meets and going into Champs, I am expecting the same strong performance,” he said.

“Our quarter-milers have also been doing fairly well because we are known to have good quarter-milers over the years and we have some quality persons in the field events who are led by Cedricka Williams. She is ranked number one in the under-20 discus and she will be our flagbearer in the field,” Anderson stated.
