Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is among the likely successors to Liz Truss who has announced her resignation.

Johnson was ousted in July over a series of ethics scandals, with Truss taking up the role in September.

Bitterly divided Conservative Party lawmakers have just a few days to agree on Truss' successor, or face yet another leadership contest.

Other potential contenders include former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, who lost to Truss in the last leadership contest, and House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

Truss announced her resignation Thursday, bowing to the inevitable after a tumultuous six-week term in which her policies triggered turmoil in financial markets and a rebellion in her party obliterated her authority.
