Why the late-evening fare increase?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Allow me to use this medium to voice my concern about the flaws of the transportation infrastructure. I am a frequent commuter of the Half-Way Tree to Annotto Bay route. For quite some time I’ve realised that when it gets to a certain time in the evenings, the legal fare persons would have paid to reach Half-Way Tree in the mornings can’t take you back home.

Last week, I was in Half-Way Tree, and before I even boarded the bus to Annotto Bay, the conductor informed me that the fare would be $300 to get home from a fare that was legally agreed to be $250 by the Government.

I had no choice but to take the bus home because at the time it was the only bus on stand and it was getting late.

Can you imagine paying $300 for your fare even if you are not going as far as Annotto Bay? Our country cannot continue like this; we need more stringent measures to be in place for these conductors who are trying to rob us daily. The Government along with the transport authority should put measures in place and ensure that on a daily basis they are enforced.

At the end of the day, the Government can’t be saying one set price and these thieves are behind their back raising the fare. I agree that cost of living is high but it doesn’t make any sense you are boldly robbing the same commuters who are helping you to earn a living. Enough us enough!
