Belizean man wanted in Mexico on murder charge
BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – A magistrate has adjourned to October 13 the case involving a Belizean national who is wanted in Mexico on murder charges.
The Mexican authorities told the Belize City Magistrates Court that 34-year-old Nimrod Tillett, who has been acquitted of murder on three occasions in Belize, is wanted for the murder of a woman in 2019.
They have filed an application for a provisional arrest against him.
But, Senior Crown Counsel, Stacey Martinez, explained to the court that under the extradition treaty between Belize and Mexico, where requests are made through diplomatic channels, there must be a brief description of the person being sought.
Martinez was successful in getting the magistrate to rule that Tillett spend the next 60 days behind bars with the court indicating that necessary details must be ready within the next two months or the application will be dismissed.
When asked if he had anything to say regarding the allegations against him, Tillett threw himself to the mercy of the court and begged that he not be remanded to prison because he is still trying to recover from recent gun injuries and is unable to walk and get up without assistance.
Tillett told the court that this is the third time that he has been detained in relation to the request for a murder in Mexico.
Martinez informed the court that the prison has a facility to accommodate Tillett.
But, the court, however, ruled that Tillett be brought back on October 13 to make sure his medical needs are being attended to.
