G2K wants Golding to step aside as opposition leader

Generation 2000 (G2K), the young professional arm of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), is calling for Mark Golding to resign as opposition leader.

The demand follows Golding's admission that he still holds British citizenship following public calls for him to disclose whether he is a dual citizen.

G2K says Golding's status as a dual citizen is morally incompatible with the Office of the Leader of the Opposition

It further states that his failure to step aside would "only further erode public trust in Mr Golding and in the PNP (People's National Party)".

Meanwhile, G2K President Shayne Kerr is criticising Golding's handling of the situation, noting that the admission followed a "period of evasion and lack of transparency" where he avoided directly addressing the matter.

"His initial response to queries about his citizenship was woefully lacking and only served to misdirect persons from the reality that he is desperately clutching to his British citizenship," G2K says.

"Mr Golding's failed attempt to obfuscate the matter of his British Citizenship now raises questions about his real motives for blocking the long-awaited Constitutional Reform Process to remove the King of England as head of state, which was a matter that both Political Parties have agreed on. His actions undermined the hard work of the Constitutional Reform Committee, on which members of his own party sat. His actions have held the constitutional reform process at ransom while the people of Jamaica continue to wait with bated breath," G2K adds.
