UPDATE | Two persons in Tinson Pen crash treated at hospital
Minister with responsibility for the country's transport sector, Daryl Vaz, has confirmed that there was a mishap involving a plane at the Tinson Pen Aerodrome in Kingston, which reportedly veered off the runway and overturned shortly before 1:00 pm today.
Vaz, who spoke briefly with The Gleaner Online via telephone, said his understanding is that two persons who were aboard the aircraft were taken to hospital for medical check-up.
The minister also indicated that the injuries sustained by both men were not serious.
“I can confirm that I was informed earlier today that there was an incident involving a small twin engine aircraft on landing, where it ran into trouble and actually ran off the runway into a verge and overturned,” Vaz said.
“My understanding is that the two passengers came out on their own and subsequently were taken to the KPH (Kingston Public Hospital) where they are being monitored as we speak. The Airports Authority of Jamaica has a representative at KPH, and my understanding is that they have not been admitted.”
He added, “I am sure that the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority will have an update and a statement in due course, once we have the proper information.”
It is understood that a Piper Aztec 34 aircraft coming from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James was attempting to land at Tinson Pen in Kingston at approximately 12:45pm when it developed difficulties, veered off the runway to the south, overturned, and came to a halt in the verges.
Two males on board the aircraft were taken to hospital for medical checks.
