Jamaican and Bahamian nationals die in Haiti
Two Jamaicans are believed to have drowned after a boat on which they were travelling was intercepted by Haitian authorities.
The counternarcotics unit of the Haitian National Police (HNP) has reportedly confirmed that “under the leadership of Acting Superintendent Jeir Pierre, the Port-de-Paix police and prosecutors office intercepted a row boat heavily laden with drugs.
“The result: two Jamaicans drowned, one body in the morgue and a Bahamian in custody,” the Haitian authorities said, adding that they “seized more than 90 kilos of cocaine” and that “several other suspicious boats are believed to be still at large”.
The Haitians described the operations as "a first in the history of the Northwest”.
Meanwhile, the Bahamas government says it is waiting official confirmation that two of its nationals have been killed in Haiti and that one other Bahamian is in custody.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Bahamas Embassy in Port-au-Prince has received unconfirmed reports of the deaths.
The Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “it is communicating with the official and relevant authorities in Haiti and will continue to monitor and provide updated information”.
