WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Beliefs shape us

Published:Sunday | July 30, 2023 | 12:07 AM

What we believe to be true is the basis upon which we construct the lives we lead. Beliefs have a major impact on our life; they create the vision we hold, and this shapes our attitude towards life and relationships. The beliefs we hold are bound within our culture, both the grand culture of the world we are born into and the small culture of our family and local community.

Are those beliefs real? Questioning beliefs often produces fear and anxiety. How often we question or test those beliefs depends on our observations, experiences, and how aware we are of what is happening within. For example, at one time we believed that the world was flat. It was only with exploration that belief was dispelled forever and the new belief changed how life was lived and experienced. People often say “believe in yourself”, but they hardly tell you what to believe!

We live in a world of matter and our beliefs are shaped by what we see and know i.e. matter. We consider ourselves to be ‘matter’. Many believe that they are just a body and once they die, the story ends. Quantum physics looks at the micro-reality, observing that matter is in constant flux and does not remain static at all, which means that even the cells of our bodies are not the same as a few moments ago. The matter is ever-changing. For reality to be classified as truth, it needs to be always and forever true. To understand what reality is, we need to position ourselves in eternity, something that never changes. To understand eternity, we have to enter the realms of the spirit. Spiritual understanding says – we are manifestation of peace, love, and bliss – we resonate light and power. But when we are not aware of our eternal truth, does it mean that reality is non-existent?

Meditation is an awareness-awakening exercise. It enables us to experience the reality of eternity. These experiences become the subtle scaffolding of the relationships we have with the self, nature, and others. Emotions are fleeting, therefore, we must not base our perception of reality on fleeting emotions.

We can clearly see that the matter is out of balance now. When we awaken to the reality that we are spiritual beings and that within us is the power of peace then we step towards reinstating the balance that we all wish for. Be careful in what you believe for that becomes your reality and that can change your whole world upside-down.
