WARE auction to support Jamaican Heritage Museum
The Wattle and Red Earth (WARE) Collective has announced the 2nd Biennial Art Auction, a fundraising event aimed at supporting the development of the ‘Living Museum of Jamaican Heritage’ in Southfield, St Elizabeth.
The 2nd Biennial Art Auction will be held on October 14, which is exclusively for auction bidders. Sunday, October 15, will be online auction, allowing art-lovers and collectors worldwide to participate. The auctioneer is Douglas Reid of Grosvenor Gallery with Dervan Malcolm as master of ceremonies.
The Art Auction will feature a collection of 73 pieces created by 38 artists, including Judy-Ann MacMillan, Bernard Hoyes, Norma Harrack, Michael Elliott, Carol Campbell, Laura Facey, and George Rodney, among others. Artists from Jamaica and the diaspora will be showcased.
The primary goal of this fundraising initiative is to raise US$25,000, a notable increase from the approximately US$15,000 raised during the inaugural auction. These funds will be instrumental in advancing the development of the Living Museum of Jamaican Heritage, which aims to preserve and showcase Jamaica’s rich architectural heritage, and in particular, to complete the restoration of the 120 year-old Vassel House currently under construction.
Carol Campbell, director of WARE Collective, reflecting on the success of the first auction, stated: “The last auction was not just an art event. It was a celebration of our culture, our artists, and our shared history. People had fun, they connected, and they didn’t want to leave. We’re determined to recreate that unforgettable experience this year.”
The preview event and auction will take place at Regardless (The Manley Centre), St Andrew, which is the historic former home of Norman and Edna Manley.
