St Andrew Parish Church Foundation hosts ‘The Language of Music’

The St Andrew Parish Foundation will host a classical music concert, The Language of Music, on Sunday, March 3, starting at 5:30 p.m., at the Parish Church, Half-Way Tree.

World-renowned pianist Dr Chan Kiat Lim and accomplished vocalist Shawn Roy are scheduled to headline an evening of music by composers such as Strauss, Schumann, and Weill. The visiting artistes will be joined by the Jamaica Youth Chorale.

An active recitalist, Lim has performed solo and chamber recitals in Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Malaysia, and throughout the United States. He teaches piano performance, piano literature, and class piano at the University of Louisiana (UL), Lafayette. A dedicated teacher, his students have captured top prizes and awards at regional, national, and international piano competitions.

Roy, UL Lafayette’s coordinator of vocal studies, holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and has performed professionally in opera and musical theatres internationally. He has been affiliated with such companies as New York City Opera National Company, Cincinnati Opera, and Cleveland Opera. He has also toured extensively throughout France, Spain, Belgium, and Switzerland, and has performed with the National Symphony of Bolivia in South America.

The Jamaica Youth Chorale is one of the nation’s leading choirs and is featured in many local, regional, and international publications, productions and events to critical acclaim. This includes earning double silver awards at the World Choir Games – Championships level in South Africa; being featured on the BBC’s Caribbean Passport and at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in the United Kingdom, and hosting an annual concert season and recital.

The Language of Music is the third in a series of biennial classical music concerts hosted by the St Andrew Parish Foundation. The popular series features visiting musicians from universities in the United States, who perform free of charge for the foundation to support the church’s outreach programmes. All proceeds from the event support programmes for youth and the elderly.
