Twelve years ago, gospel artiste Biblical Lyricist wanted to give up on music. Since getting baptised in 2006, he made strides in his career, winning the Interfest contest in 2007 and placing second the following year. Yet, the St James native struggled to build a network in the industry.

“I decided that, this is it. God, I’m done,” the singjay told The Gleaner. “I want to sincerely thank my wife for being behind me because, every time I decide to give up, she says, ‘No, God called you for this … all you have to do is wait and be patient’.”

During this period, he received other signs that he should not forsake his talent. The artiste, whose given name is Franklin Scott, enrolled at the Emmanuel Caribbean University in 2016, and recalled a mid-semester exam which required him to write a song. He sought God’s counsel before writing the song, and shared that “God [told] me that I was the one who buried my talent.”

TALENT

After he performed the song Flesh Must Die for his examiner, she told him that his music is prophetic and urged him to not ignore his talent. This was one of several instances which affirmed his calling, and Biblical Lyricist decided to resume his career.

He got in contact with producer Sherwayne Musiq in 2020 and, through much persistence, got the musician to send him two rhythms to prove his abilities. Three days later, Biblical Lyricist sent two songs: Logos War and Kingdom Rock. Impressed, Sherwayne Musiq decided to release the songs, and they’ve been working together ever since.

They are now working on Biblical Lyricist’s debut album, Kingdom Assignment.

“The album is speaking of the dos and don’ts of the kingdom of God,” he explained. “It’s actually also encouragement. It’s warfare, too, because I realise the Lord is pumping me with warfare songs, even though everything is warfare, but more like the radical type of gospel. I believe this album will make an impact because, if you have nine songs or eight on an album, at least somebody will like one and people will stream it. I am confident in my craft and I know I can write well with the help of the Holy Spirit.”

Album tracks include pre-releases Scan Dem and God Woman, the latter holding a special place in the artiste’s heart for its message that women should honour themselves and their temples. It was produced by DJ Chinny and Sherwayne Musiq. He also spoke about The Process, an album track which “speaks of when persons get hurt by the church, how to deal with it and the reason God allowed all of that”.
