Classics in June for Father’s Day

Lovers of classical music are once again in for a treat at the annual Classics in June concert, which will take place at the Church of the Ascension in Mona, St Andrew, on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, beginning at 5 p.m.

The 18th annual charity fundraising concert is being staged by the Soroptimist International of Jamaica, Kingston club, under the patronage of Ambassador of France to Jamaica, Olivier Guyonvarch and Madame Boulie Guyonvarch.

The concert will feature early to contemporary classical works interpreted by talented singers and players of instruments. Among the artistes who will perform are lecturer at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, as well as an attorney-at-law in Japan, Yuko Aoki, on piano; flautist Laurice Barnaby; harpist, Avery Barnett; tenor, songwriter and vocal coach Karim Chang; counter tenor, pianist (soloist and accompanist) Mickel Gordon; soprano Nomali Lumsden-Campbell, lecturer in music at The Mico University College; Director of the Jamaican Folk Singers and classical singer, Christine MacDonald-Nevers; classical guitarist Shawn Richards; native Cuban and now naturalised Jamaican as well as director of music with the Jamaica Defence Force, Rafael Salazar, on clarinet; violinist and composer, Gabriel Walters; and renowned violinist and recipient of a 2021 Gold Musgrave Medal, Steven Woodham.

Tickets for patrons attending the concert in person will be available at a cost of $3,000 each at the gate and at The Music Mart and Fontana Pharmacy (Waterloo Road).

Proceeds from the concert will support the club’s outreach initiatives at the Shortwood United Church Early Childhood Development Centre, the Reddie’s Children’s Home as well as other Soroptimist charities to empower women and girls.
