Youth Week closes with celebration of excellence at Annual Awards Ball

Youth Week came to a vibrant close with the Youth Development Agency (YDA) Ball at the National Arena, where 17-year-old Dawn Kavanagh and 16-year-old Dane Levy were crowned ‘Girl of the Year’ and ‘Boy of the Year,’ respectively. Kavanagh, a member of the Town Head Youth Club and student at Manning's High School, received her award from Minister of Youth and Community Development, the Hon Douglas Manley, while Levy, a student from St Mary High School, was honoured with his trophy and cash prizes.

Girl, Boy of the Year chosen at YDA Ball

SEVENTEEN year-old Dawn Kavanagh, member of the Town Head Youth Club in Region 5 and a student of Manning's High School, was crowned ‘Girl of the Year’ at the Youth Development Agency Ball at the National Arena on Saturday night. Dane Levy, sixteen-year-old student of St Mary High School and a member of the Untouchable Youth Club, was chosen ‘Boy of the Year’.

Miss Kavanaugh was crowned by the Minister of Youth and Community Development, the Hon Douglas Manley, who also presented her with the shield. Newton Jacks, ‘Boy of the Year’ for 1972, pinned on the sash. She received a cash award of $25 from the Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon Hugh Shearer, and $250 in cash from Manns Department Store, Premier Plaza, along with other gifts.

The runners-up were Miss Dorette Balgrove, a teacher from Region 1, and Adlai Robinson, of the Central Youth Club in Region 4. The Pt Maria Police Club won the Margaret Robertson Cup for Club achievements in the Best Club Competition. The cup is now retired to that club for having won it for three successive years.

Mrs O.K. Melhado, wife of the chairman of the Social Development Commission, presented the cup to Sonia Stewart, representative of the Pt Maria Club.

The prize of $250 for the Most Outstanding Project went to Temple Height Club in Zone 2; $120 went to Our Own Club for the Best Organised Project, and the prize for the Best Executed Project went to Redwood Rovers in Zone 4. Kingston Parish Church Club received $50 for the Most Suitably Chosen Project, which was the painting of the Home for the Aged. Mrs Michael Manley will present a cup to the Temple Heights Club at a later date.

This event marked the climax of Youth Week celebrations. Emcee was Gladstone Wilson and music was provided by the Fabulous Five Inc and the Generation Gap bands
