Local Government officers in Jamaica were poised to benefit from scholarships to observe municipal administration in the United States. The opportunity was discussed during a courtesy call in which newly appointed American Ambassador Summer Gerard responded favourably to a suggestion from then Kingston Mayor, Councillor Ralph Brown.

American Ambassador calls on Mayor

The possibility exists for persons involved in Local Government to observe municipal administration in the United States through scholarships.

Mr. Summer Gerard, the newly appointed American Ambassador to Jamaica, made this statement on Friday in response to a suggestion by the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Ralph Brown, that scholarships be made available not only to individuals in Central Government, as is currently the case, but also to Local Government officers who require the experience to assist them in their administrative roles.

The American Ambassador was paying a courtesy call on the Mayor in his Chambers. He said that he would be pleased to explore the possibilities and suggested that the Mayor formally present his ideas in writing.

Councillor Brown also proposed the establishment of an Embassy office in Montego Bay, where, he noted, there is usually a large number of American citizens.
The Ambassador was accompanied on the visit by Mr. William Breer, First Secretary at the American Embassy. A souvenir album was presented to the Ambassador by the Mayor.
