Bonding over Brew enhances Sunday family tradition for the Goldsons
On Sunday, the Clubhouse Brewery came to life as the National Commercial Bank celebrated dedicated and devoted fathers with an event called Bonding over Brew. The mission was to connect and toast to the legacy of family, community and nation-building. And one family that was most appreciative of the occasion were the Goldsons.
Wines, beers, and requested cocktails floated through the transformed oasis. And attendees delighted their palates with a variety of tasty hors d’oeuvres. Among the day’s festivities was a guided craft brewing experience, learning about the beer from concept to fruition. At the end of the behind-the-scenes tour, guests were invited to have a taste of the beers from the featured line at the brewery.
“The session was very good, excellent actually. Just knowing that we could make beers of this quality right here, and they don’t seem very expensive. I enjoyed the experience,” explained patriarch Dr Lloyd Goldson to Food, noting that his favourite flavour from the tasting was the sorrel.
The proud father revealed that although he is a modest drinker, he values events of this wholesome nature that bring families together and celebrate fathers in a wonderful way. “It was that we were able to bond together on today of all days,” said Dr Lloyd Goldson.
For the Goldson family, Sundays are rooted in the tradition of quality time over dinner. “We normally eat together on a Sunday. And it has been a tradition we have kept alive, even as my sons have moved out of the nest and now live close by as neighbours,” he said.
His son, Christopher Goldson, who stood by his father’s side in attendance, shared that he was grateful for an event that celebrated the hero in his life.
“The event today was very well put together, enjoyable. The food was incredibly tasty, and I just love the fact that it celebrates fathers, he said, adding, “My father and I are very close. He sets an excellent example, and he definitely is my number one role model.”
Christopher Goldson went on to highlight that he found the beer session to be enjoyable as well as informative. “My biggest lesson from the tour has to be that craft beer is actually one of the healthier beers out there. This is definitely exciting to hear. My favourite one was the sorrel,” he said.
And he gave us his take on the Goldsons’ Sunday family tradition. “Family is very important. Gathering on a Sunday is something we’ve always done since I was young. And it’s a tradition I hold very close to my heart,” Christopher Goldson shared.
For him, a typical Sunday dinner starts with prayer. And the amazing meal thereafter includes a scrumptious spread ranging from rice and peas to baked chicken or fried chicken and curried goat to mixed vegetables. “The fried plantain is my favourite part,” he added.
But the experience goes much deeper than gastronomy. It’s an opportunity for the family to catch up on the happenings of the past week.“We’ll talk about what we’re going through in the week, and catch up, and sometimes we might even discuss current affairs,” he said.
The second Goldson son, Dr Marlon Goldson, chimed in, agreeing with the sentiments of highlighting the importance of appreciating fathers, both at the event and within families.
“This event was wonderful. The set-up was well [done] and it was organised very well. The beer session was short and sweet, but also an eye-opener. I didn’t know about this type of beer. And learning that there was a certain half-life to craft beer was interesting; it has to stay cold. I’m a fan of beer, and my favourite was neon. It had a distinctive aftertaste that I enjoyed,” said Dr Marlon Goldson.
Speaking on fatherhood and family life, the doctor added, “In terms of empowering and celebrating men, it’s important to have an event of this magnitude because a lot of men don’t celebrate men in general. And it is even better to be present in honouring men who play an active role in their children’s lives.”
Listing curried goat as his dish of choice for Sunday dinners, congregating as a family means the world to Dr Marlon Goldson, who is grateful for the bonding time. “These weekly dinners allow us to stay grounded. We can always ask for advice, no matter how old we are. And it will also help when we have children to know that family is very important,” he added.
